CHAPTER THIRTEEN
At some point in the night, Holly woke up. She didnât know what had caused her to wake up. Normally, she slept all the way through.
The wind was howling outside. Far away, she could hear the waves crashing on the cliffs.
She shivered. What had woken her?
She heard Honey growling. That wasnât like her. Was someone there? Suddenly, she felt very alone and very vulnerable. She kept listening. There was a banging noise that sounded like a loose shutter from a couple of doors down.
She didnât hear anything else. Eventually, she managed to persuade herself that it was all in her imagination, and she went back to sleep, although it took some time.
In the morning, the wind died down. Everything seemed a bit better by the light of day. She told herself there had been nothing to worry about. She was just on edge. With all that had been going on, it was no wonder. She wasnât used to this kind of thing. Not for the first time, she thought corporate life had nothing on small-town life when it came to ruthlessness.
She was more determined than ever to get to the bottom of things. She felt as though there was something buried deep in this town, and she wanted to dig it up and find out just what it was.
When she took Honey out for her morning walk, she looked up at the cliffs. Everything looked as though it was back to normal at the Montgomery house. It was strange to look up at it now with the knowledge that she had been inside that house, the house that she had spent so much time looking at. It had revealed some of its secrets to her. Of course, she hadnât had a chance to explore it, but now whenever she looked at it, she knew that sheâd see the grand hallway, the office...and Michael.
Now her investigation was going to take her down another path.
After sheâd taken Honey for her morning walk, she made her way to the library.
She began looking at newspapers from the time, which Clara had indicated should contain the story about what had happened to Andrew Johnson.
She went to the earliest possible date. There was nothing about it there, so she kept looking.
As she went, she started to get into the rhythm of it, working faster, scanning the pages, and going over the headlines for anything that might be relevant.
There was nothing. When she got to the end of the period she had been focusing on, she considered going back to the beginning.
She told herself that it was pointless. But she didnât know what to do now. She began idly clicking on random dates and looking through them quickly.
It was only then that she noticed something. Something was missing.
She looked at the list of dates and noticed gaps in them. They were right in the middle of the period she had been looking at. She became increasingly convinced that this was more than just a mistake.
She thought to herself that someone had done this.
